Face Tutorial

Okay, now you can make the outline any color you want. In the layers box hit the first box after where it says Lock. This will prevent any paint outside of what's already on the layer from showing up. So, pick the color you would like for the outline. If you wanted to do it Disney style, you'd pick a darker color than the actual filled in color. In this case I prefer to keep the outline black, so I'll go over it with a pretty large airbrush.
``Or, if you want the outline all black (or all some other color) just select the color, then all of the layer with Ctrl+A then hit Alt+backspace. That should quickly make your outline the color you chose.`` Save!

You should go ahead and leave that layer locked the whole time unless you want to edit some of your lines, then you have to unlock it. But, next step...Create new layers to color on. To do this you can either hit Ctrl+Shift+N, or you can go up to the top menu under Layer>New Layer. A window will pop up asking you to name to layer. You can if you want or you can leave them numbered, but I tend you use a lot of layers when coloring in cel style and the previews of the layers are too small for me to tell what's on them. So let's name this one "skin". I always color the skin first.

The bad thing about Photoshop--if you make a mistake you can only "undo" it with Ctrl+Z once. But you can undo more if you go to where you can see the layers and hit the History tab. It's a record of all the things you've done to your picture so far. It's a little painstaking if you make a lot of mistakes to keep going back and forth with the History tab. So if you hit Ctrl+Alt+Z it will backtrack the actions in the history tab without you having to go back and forth.
But anyway...okay, make sure that the skin layer is underneath the Layer 1, otherwise it will color on top of it and cover your outlines. You can just highlight it and drag it. Now if you have a tablet, this is the easy part. Color away. I tend to go out of the lines at first and then go back and erase what I have to later. If I put other layers on top of this one, I won't have to erase the excess.

If you don't have a tablet, the easiest way to color cel style is to use the Polygonal Lasso tool. It's under where the regular Lasso tool is, just hold it down and select the Polygonal one. Then outline the area you want to color, connecting the end of the selection back to where you started. Then use the Paint Bucket tool. It's usually a lot easier if you zoom in when you use the Lasso using the navigator that you see in the upper right. Just hit the big mountain on the right of that window.
