Face Tutorial
Here we go, coloring the face I drew in the previous tutorial. I'll be using Photoshop 6 and coloring cel style-aka what you see in anime. Hope you all can follow this. If you have any suggestions for my tutorials, please don't hesitate to email me. Don't forget to save often! You don't want anything to happen to your picture while you're so hard at work coloring it.
Okay, once you open your drawing in Photoshop go under Image on the top menu bar and highlight Mode. If you scanned your piece into the computer it might have been saved as grayscale. Make sure that the Mode is RGB color, otherwise you won't be able to color your drawing in anything else but black and white.

Now select all of the drawing. The easiect way is to hit Ctrl+A or if you're on a Mac I think it's the weird curly symbol+A(for mac users where ever there is a Ctrl I believe you hit that curly symbol instead). Then hit Ctrl+X and that will cut everything from your picture. Hit Ctrl+V and it will automatically paste your picture into a new layer.

Make sure that Layer one is highlighted before you do this, which it automatically should be when you paste the new layer in there. Where you see the Layers click on the tab that says Channel. At the bottom of that section there are four buttons. Hit the first one that looks like a dotted circle. This will select all of the white spaces in the drawing. Now hit the delete button. Whala! Your layer is now transparent, and you can color under it.
``I have been notified of another way to make your layer transparent by someone using Elements. Make sure Layer 1 is selected. Use an area selecting tool such as the dotted box selector near the top of the tool thing. Then select and area of white or whatever color your background paper is. Then go up to the top menu bar under Select and hit Similar. This will select everything on that layer that is similar to what you selected with the box (namely the white background). Then hit Delete. ``

My background is blue because when I cut the picture, the bottom color in the vertical tool thing was blue. If you want it to be some other color you can choose the paint bucket tool, highlight the background layer and use it. If you can't find the paint bucket tool hold down the gradient tool and it's under there. *Any button that has that tiny triangle in the lower corner has other tools under it if you hold it down.* It took me a while to learn that.^_^
