Not much personal information is known about Fern's mother, but she has been a very efficient and well-loved ruler. She encountered Fern's father some hundred years ago when he and his team dug their way into their cavernous realm. They had thought they were going to die in the Earth's tunnels, but she took pity on them and restored their health though she knew they had short life spans. Surprisingly her affections grew for the navigator and for a short time she allowed selfish actions on her part...and his, hence producing Fern. They left a short while later, guaranteed passage back to the surface safely.
